Executive Overview

Becoming a certified advocate in Pakistan requires crossing key regulatory milestones established by the Pakistan Bar Council and Provincial Bar Councils. Follow this comprehensive step-by-step roadmap to understand the journey from admission to full courtroom practice.

Step 1: Pass the HEC Law Admission Test (LAT)

The journey begins by clearing the Law Admission Test (LAT) with at least 50% marks after completing intermediate or equivalent studies.

Step 2: Complete the 5-Year Accredited LLB Degree

Enroll in an institution accredited by the Pakistan Bar Council, such as Abbott Law College Mansehra. Over five years and ten semesters, you complete comprehensive coursework across substantive and procedural law, participate in moot courts, and gain fundamental legal reasoning skills.

Step 3: Clear the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT)

After graduating with your LLB degree, you must pass the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) conducted by the HEC. Law-GAT assesses practical legal comprehension in Civil Law, Criminal Law, Evidence, Jurisprudence, and Legal Ethics. A minimum score of 50% is mandatory to apply for bar licensing.

Step 4: Complete the 6-Month Bar Apprenticeship

Candidates must attach themselves as pupils with a recognized senior advocate having at least 10 years of active practice. During this 6-month pupilage, you attend court proceedings, learn how to draft plaints, file petitions, and observe courtroom advocacy firsthand.

Step 5: Obtain Lower Court License & Bar Association Membership

Upon concluding pupilage, you submit your bar enrollment form, chamber attendance diary, Law-GAT scorecard, and degrees to your Provincial Bar Council (e.g., Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council). Following a formal interview, you receive your advocacy license and become an enrolled member of the District Bar Association.

Step 6: Elevate to Advocate High Court

After completing two consecutive years of active lower-court practice and submitting a certified portfolio of cases conducted, you can apply for enrollment as an Advocate of the High Court, permitting you to plead before all High Courts across Pakistan.
